Remote work is no longer a perk — it’s a reality many of us live in every day. And while it brings flexibility and freedom, it also quietly tests two things: our productivity and our sense of connection.

So here are a few practical recommendations that actually work.

1. Don’t Leave Productivity to Chance — Create Rhythm

In an office, your day naturally has structure. Remotely, you have to build it yourself.

  • Set clear start and end times
  • Break your day into focused blocks
  • Keep your priorities visible, both for yourself and your team

One thing we’ve learned internally is that regular 1-on-1s make a huge difference. They’re not just check-ins, they create accountability, clarity, and space to reset direction when needed.

Without that rhythm, even the most motivated people can drift.

2. Communication Needs to Be More Intentional and More Human

Remote work often becomes overly transactional: messages, tasks, deadlines.

But people need more than that.

  • Ask one extra question beyond the task
  • Turn some chats into quick calls
  • Be visible, not just responsive

We try to support this by naturally embedding small moments of interaction into the workday what we call inline team building. Nothing forced, just simple ways to keep conversations human while work is happening.

From time to time, we organize online team-building activities to keep our colleagues engaged and spend time together.

Because connection shouldn’t feel like a scheduled obligation.

3. Create Spaces Where People Can Show Up Differently

Not every interaction should be about deliverables.

People connect when they can share ideas, opinions, or even curiosity.

That’s why we’ve seen real value in things like Smart Talks sessions where people share knowledge, experiences, or perspectives. It’s not about performance; it’s about visibility and learning from each other.

And similarly, Tech Talks give space for deeper dives into expertise. They help people grow while also reinforcing a sense of shared direction.

The key idea: connection grows when people feel seen beyond their role.

Within the company, we host regular Smart Talks sessions to bring colleagues together to learn something new on wellbeing and soft skills topics.
From time to time, we also gather with colleagues on the Expert Tech talks to learn insights and expertise from each other.

4. Energy Doesn’t Just Happen — You Have to Create It

In a remote setup, there’s no office buzz. No spontaneous moments. No shared breaks.

If you don’t create energy, things can start to feel flat.

One simple but effective way inside Olsys we’ve addressed this is through active challenges – small, engaging activities that bring our colleagues together around something fun or meaningful.

It could be wellness, creativity, or friendly competition. The format doesn’t matter as much as the outcome: people feel part of something shared.

5. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Consistency

You don’t need big initiatives to build culture remotely. You need consistent small ones.

  • Regular conversations
  • Repeated formats (like talks or challenges)
  • Familiar touchpoints people can rely on

Over time, these create stability and that’s what replaces the “office feeling.”

Remote work works best when we stop treating it as just a different location and start treating it as a different system.
